Single-story stucco ranch house on an open lot, with dry grassland and mountains in the distance

Heating a home here isn’t quite the same as in the city: you’re higher up, your gas and electricity can come from different companies than your neighbor’s across US 50, and permits go through the county.

Two gas companies and two electric companies

The Pueblo West Metropolitan District describes the split roughly along US 50. The lines aren’t exact — your bills are the final word.

Natural gas

  • Xcel Energy — mainly south of US 50
  • Colorado Natural Gas — mainly north of US 50

Smell gas? Get outside, then call 911 or your gas company’s emergency line: Xcel at 1-800-895-2999, or the emergency number on your Colorado Natural Gas bill.

Electricity

  • Black Hills Energy — mainly north of US 50
  • San Isabel Electric — mainly south of US 50

Power out? Report it to the company on your bill. Gas furnaces and heat pumps both need electricity to run.

It matters beyond emergencies, too: utility rebates for furnaces and heat pumps depend on which companies serve your address, and they change. Check your utilities’ current offers before you buy new equipment.

Higher than the city — around 5,000 feet

Pueblo itself sits around 4,700 feet. Pueblo West is listed at 5,033 feet, and the district’s early promotional material described elevations from about 4,920 to 5,500 feet across the development.

That matters because furnace makers draw their high-altitude lines in different places — some at 4,000 feet, others at 5,000 or 5,500 — and require high-altitude pressure switches or gas orifices above them. Depending on the model and where your house sits, a furnace in Pueblo West can land on a different side of those lines than the same furnace in the city. The right setup comes from your furnace’s installation manual, matched to your elevation and your gas company’s gas.

Newer than the city — but not new

Pueblo West started in 1969, when developer Robert P. McCulloch began turning ranch land west of Pueblo into a planned community. You won’t find the century-old houses here that you’ll find in Bessemer or near downtown. The community has grown to more than 33,000 residents (2020 Census).

Newer doesn’t mean new, though. Carrier puts a well-maintained gas furnace at about 15 to 20 years, so a furnace installed in 2006 turns 20 this year. If yours is original to a house built in the 2000s or earlier, it’s worth knowing where it stands before the next cold snap — see repair or replace.

Permits go through Pueblo County

Pueblo West isn’t part of the City of Pueblo, so a furnace replacement here is permitted by Pueblo County’s own building division, which took over permits for unincorporated Pueblo County on January 1, 2026. (Inside the city, permits now go through the new Southern Colorado Building Department.) Under the county’s code, the mechanical contractor pulls the mechanical permit. Colorado’s carbon monoxide alarm law applies when that permitted work is done.

Questions we hear

Who do I call if I smell gas in Pueblo West?

Get everyone outside first. Then call 911, or your gas company’s emergency line from outside: Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-2999 if Xcel bills you for gas, or the emergency number printed on your bill if your gas comes from Colorado Natural Gas. Don’t call us first.

Which electric company serves my Pueblo West home?

Black Hills Energy serves mainly the area north of US 50 and San Isabel Electric mainly the area south of it, according to the Pueblo West Metropolitan District. The boundaries aren’t exact, so check your bill.

Does Pueblo West’s elevation change how a furnace should be set up?

It can. Pueblo West is around 5,000 feet — higher than the city — and some furnace models switch to high-altitude pressure switches or orifices at 5,000 or 5,500 feet. Your furnace’s manual decides, based on your actual elevation.
