How hot Pueblo gets
National Weather Service records for Pueblo Memorial Airport. A normal year brings about 1,078 cooling degree days — far fewer than the 5,334 heating degree days, but concentrated into a hot summer.

One degree shy of the record.
Reached on July 12 and again on July 14.
Compared with 65 in 2023 and 70 in 2025.
Common AC problems and what they mean
Turn it off, call usOutdoor unit hums, but the fan doesn’t spin
A failed run capacitor or fan motor is the usual cause. Carrier warns that running the system with a bad capacitor can ruin the compressor within hours or days. Don’t poke at it: capacitors hold a dangerous charge even with the power off.
Turn it offIce on the indoor coil or the copper line
Restricted airflow (often a clogged filter) or low refrigerant. Let it thaw with the AC off, replace the filter, and call us if it ices again.
Check, then callBlowing warm air
Thermostat on Cool and set below room temperature? Breakers on, including the outdoor unit’s? Filter clean? If yes, the cause is often the capacitor, the contactor, a refrigerant leak or the compressor — all technician work.
Call usTurns on and off every few minutes
A thermostat near a supply register can shut the AC off too soon (U.S. Department of Energy). System sizing and refrigerant charge are the other things we check.
Call usWater around the indoor unit
A plugged condensate drain. Left alone it can cause water damage and mold.
AC in Pueblo: a few local notes
Swamp coolers vs. refrigerated air
Evaporative coolers suit Colorado’s dry air and generally use less energy than air conditioners, according to Colorado State University — but they lose effectiveness as the humidity rises, and they need more maintenance. Refrigerated central air (or a heat pump) cools regardless of humidity.
Power
Your AC runs on electricity from Black Hills Energy inside Pueblo city limits, or from Black Hills Energy or San Isabel Electric in Pueblo West. If the outdoor unit won’t restart after an outage, call us.
Spring check
ENERGY STAR recommends a cooling check in the spring, before contractors get busy. That’s the time to catch a weak capacitor or a slow refrigerant leak — not the first 100-degree week.
Questions we hear
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Check the thermostat (Cool, set below room temperature), the breakers, and the filter. Then look at the outdoor unit: if it’s silent, or humming with the fan not spinning, the capacitor, contactor or fan motor is a likely culprit. If it runs but the air is still warm, low refrigerant from a leak is a common cause. Call us for anything past the filter.
The copper line or indoor coil is covered in ice. What should I do?
Turn the AC off at the thermostat and let the ice melt — running it frozen can damage the compressor. Replace the filter if it’s dirty. A frozen coil comes from restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and if a clean filter doesn’t fix it, it needs a technician to find the cause (often a leak).
Is central AC worth it in Pueblo if I have a swamp cooler?
Colorado State University notes that evaporative coolers suit Colorado’s dry air and generally use less energy than air conditioners, but they lose effectiveness as humidity rises and need more upkeep. Refrigerated air cools regardless of humidity. If your cooler struggles on humid days, we can talk through central AC or a heat pump for your house.
Do you work on heat pumps too?
Yes. A heat pump’s outdoor unit is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse for heat, so most of the problems on this page apply. See heat pump repair.
